HYPOTHETICAL BEST GEAR

Prepare yourself for a wall of theorycrafting text from Erayzer:

I think I've figured out what would be the best gear, theoretically. Dex and AC would be useless, since having high to hit% will beat AC easily anyway. So, I think having a king's prefix should be sufficient, maybe even having two iron rings could do the job. But, King's is the best prefix for damage available thus making iron pretty much useless in to hit regards. That's assuming Wirt sells affixes up to 2*clvl (which I'm not sure about). Strength is pretty bad too, since the amount of damage it gives, compared to how much life we can get on same item slots, which would make +vitality or +life better. Taking all of this into account, I think the best items would be:
Sword: King's Bastard Sword of Gore OR King's Bastard Sword of the Heavens Shield: Obsidian large Shield of the Tiger Helm: Obsidian Great Helm of the Lion *Armor: Awesome Studded Leather Armor of the Lion/osmosis? Rings: Iron ring of Zest, Iron Ring of the Jaguar, Ravens/Jaguar or zest (For more healing and mage variants, we duel without potions) *(might as well put AC here, since body armor is most probably giving more AC than anything else, and already having 2 Obsidian items will most likely give max resists). The lack of Prefix choices makes it hard to come up with really good rings and armor. Other options

-Raven's ring of the mind for mage-build.
-Obsidian helm and armor of sorcery for mage build again.
-Maybe all attributes instead of vitality for bow users.
-Adria was selling Bountiful staff of Phasing once, I thought this could be good also for mages, allowing unpredictable movement in duels.
-Maybe sword of sorcery, with dmg/to hit% for mage/warrior hybrids, but even then, I think King's heavens beat this.
-Blue/White/Red rings of +Life/Vita if resists aren't high enough
-Rings of the sky are not to be underestimated.

I think the most expensive item we'll have to buy is a King's Bastard Sword of the Heavens.
Based on the formula: C= Bp + Bs + Qp + Qs + I (Mp + Ms)
a perfect King's Bastard Sword of the Heavens would cost 112900. But that is Griswold's price.
For Wirt, multiply Griswold's price by 1.5. Sadly, it means we'll have to pay 169350 for a perfect King's / Heavens. So I would advise not shopping before having at least this amount of gold, which can be very inconvenient since so much gold takes nearly all the inventory space.

UNUSED GRAPHICS

A friend of mine was able to find these unused graphics in the Diablo 1 code. Some of them are pretty nifty.
I have heard that some of these are used in the Hellfire expansion.

SPAWNBOT DOWN

I have moved to a new place where I can only get internet when my phone is tethered into my computer. As such, the spawnbot will be down until I get a constant supply of internets.

HOW TO SCREENSHOT

Obviously when you find a really cool item or an awesome room filled with gold you gotta take a screenshot!

To screenshot in Diablo 1 all you need to do is press the "print screen" button. This saves a screenshot in the Diablo folder. The file type is .pcx which is very old and can not be opened by mspaint. To open it and save it as another file type you will need a program such as Photoshop or Gimp. Gimp is free and has most of the capabilities of Photoshop so I recommend using it!

FIRST SPAWN BEST OF 3 DUEL

___Late on the night of February 27th an ultimate showdown took place on level 1 of the church. Legitdemowar had just purchased a new sword and thought he could knock Erayzer off his throne as best Spawn pvper. The crowd was on the edge of their seats as they prepared to witness the first best of 3 match in recorded Spawn history.

___The first match went to Legitdemowar because of his OP Kings Sword of the Stars. The two warriors then compared their stats. It seemed that their average damage was the same, Erayzer had a higher HP and slightly higher AC, and Legit had almost double the %to hit.

___Legitdemowar thought he had this best of 3 in the bag, but Erayzer came back in the second round using his experience in Diablo 1 full version to counter Legit's OP gear. Legitdemowar needed to buy more mana potions but he forgot that he left his gold on the ground. Legit then remarked that he and Erayzer would kick anyone's ass in a 2v2 Spawn match.

___Then it was time for the final match. Suspense hung heavy in the air and you could taste the epicness. As the countdown went off the crowd took one huge breath and held it. Dancing through fireballs and swordswipes, pressuring and feinting, the two gods of Spawn clashed in a nova of skill and talent. Then the final blow was struck, and the only sound was Legitdemowar's ear falling to the ground.

___The crowd all reached out their hands to catch it. For a souvenear. Get it?

WORST ITEM DISCOVERED

SHRINE HUNTING TECHNIQUES

When players reach a certain level (13, 14, 15) many monsters do not give exp. For this reason a player may choose to focus on finding Stat Shrines rather than killing monsters for gold or exp. Here are some methods I have had success with.

LEVEL 1 CHARGED BOLT METHOD

This method involves running through level 1 without attacking monsters, then using a staff of charged bolt to clear many monsters at once.

This saves a lot of time as you will clear out monsters standing in your way, and will not have to stop to individually attack each one. The cost to recharge the staves is very low, and the price per charge decreases as the max charges of the staff goes up. With a 78 charge staff it cost me about 5.5 gold per charge. With a 237 charge staff (bountiful staff of charged bolt) it costs 1.75 per charge.

SHADOW FARMING

This method involves a lot of preparation, and has not yet been fully tested. The idea behind shadow farming is to get gear with "of the Night" suffix and use a low light radius to run through the dungeons almost undetected.

This avoids collecting large groups of monsters following you around and make it a great deal easier to explore the dungeon without wasting time on killing things that are in your way.

SPAWN'S MISSING FEATURE

Much to my dismay I found out that in Spawn, no matter how many times you click the cows the warrior never says anything funny. This is clearly the biggest feature missing from spawn.

Erayzer commented that the best feature in Spawn is the "Not a Chance" feature, as it is not in the full version of the game.

GOLD FARMING GUIDE

Since gold is much more rare in Spawn, players want to know how to optimize their games to yield the most gold over time. Here are a few tips to increase your gold per minute.

1. Start the dungeon with a clear inventory. More space means more loot.

2. Try to find a weapon that will one-shot most monsters.

3. Wear gear with +to hit chance.

4. Find the level 2 stairs and go down them as soon as you find them. Level 2 has much better loot, and the gold piles are about double.

5. Prioritize attacking Fallen One variants which are in melee range. Never chase a Fallen One that is running away from you, unless it is running in the direction you want to go.

6. Try to make only 1 trip back to town. If you must return to town, use a town portal spell or scroll and dump your inventory on the ground. On your second return trip make one trip to Griswold and one to Adria.

7. Prioritize your inventory based on the Item Sell List.

8. Unless your heal spell is very high, make good use of Pepin. Only use potions in extreme emergencies.

9. Use identify scrolls while in the dungeon. This not only frees up an inventory slot, but tells you if your blue item is cursed or worth keeping.
10. Only use Cain if you are out of ID scrolls.

11. Once you reach high spell levels spells such as lightning can be used cost effectively to increase farming speeds.

12. Use the charges on staves to kill monsters faster.

Following these tips you can reach high GPM and afford all the best items a level 15 Wirt can sell you!

MYSTERIOUS SHRINE LOG

STR:1

TIMED RUNS AND GOLD PER SECOND

The purpose of these runs was to determine the value of running levels one and two, or level two exclusively. The clock was started upon entering the Church and stopped when all items found were sold. I tried to minimize trips by taking only the most valuable items. This ended up being about 1 trip per level. Sometimes level 2 would yield enough loot for 2 trips back with inventory filled with fairly high level items.

OPTIMAL STAT BUILD

For ease of maxing out stats as fast as possible it is recommended to put all points gained from level ups into strength. The reason for this is the Warrior's high maximum strength. Once a stat reaches max, your character will no longer benefit from shrines of that stat. Putting all stats into strength maximizes the long term benefits of stat shrines.

UNIQUE ITEMS LIST

The first unique item found in recent Spawn history was discovered early in on the morning of February 20th by Erayzer. This caused much excitement in the Spawn community.

AMAZING DUEL ENDED IN TIE

On February 20th early in the morning the two top spawn players fought an epic battle to the death. The result was the first duel to end in a tie in recent Spawn history.

SHRINE LEVEL GUIDE

Since level 15 is the max level in Spawn we have devised a way to track your character's progress through stats gained from shrines. To calculate your shrine level use the following formula:

{Total Stats - [(Character Level - 1)*5 + 85]}/5

So basically what you are doing is adding up all your base stats and all stats gained from level ups, subtracting that number from your current total stats and dividing that number by 5.

Besides gear, shrine level is the main form of character advancement. It is theoretically possible to have stats greater than that of a level 50 character by making use of shrines.

The chances of a shrine being a stat bonus shrine is 1/5

RING DATABASE

This is where all rings found so far will be listed.

Shortly after leveling to 13 I found my first ring ever. Possibly the first ring in Spawn since the early days. Needless to say I was delighted.

Found this one on the same day. Erayzer postulates that rings can only be found by players above level 12. Both of my rings were dropped from Devil Kin. Still on the hunt for a ring of sorcery...

This ring has since been accidentally sold to Griswold. That is because I was equiping this ring at the time:

Its funny that the best ring in Spawn has a cursed prefix.

Erayzer found these three rings:

Still dreaming of that +10 to all stats ring.

These next 2 rings were found in the same game, setting a new record for rings found in a single game!

LARGEST GOLD ROOM TO DATE

Since gold is so limited in Spawn, finding a huge room filled with it is every Spawn player's dream. Here are a few of the better gold rooms that have been found.

A huge gold room was discovered February 19th late in the night.

DIABLO SHAREWARE REVIVAL

I recently started playing Diablo 1 again and became to realize that it is still fun even to this day. While playing on battle.net I found a few other players who were still playing. One day I mentioned to one of the players that I remembered playing the Diablo 1 multiplayer demo. Turns out this guy also used to play and we decided to make new characters on the Diablo Shareware (Hereafter referred to as "Spawn") to test the limits of the game, get max stats with shrines, and become the best Spawn pvpers on the net. After playing for a bit and going through a huge nostalgia trip I found out that Spawn is just as fun as the full game. It is everything about D1 melted down into a tiny microcosm of a microcosm. Here is a list of the things I particularly like about Spawn:

1. LESS IS WORTH MORE - Since its only the first 2 levels of the D1 dungeon your resources are very limited. Money is much harder to get and much more useful than in D1. Mana can only be refilled with found potions, repair bills get expensive, and the best gear and spells can only be bought from vendors for very high prices. This gives the game a sense of resource management which rewards good critical thinking skills.

2. SPELLS COST LESS MANA - Because your character stays at a low level. This means that even with the low mana pool of a warrior you can use spells practically. Even without investing many points into magic, high level spell books can be read with the proper gear.

3. ALL CLASSES IN ONE - In Spawn you can only be a warrior. What this means is you can be any kind of warrior you want. The three main builds of magic, swords and bows still apply, with all sorts of room for hybrid specs.

Really Spawn is all the fun of the actual game, compressed into a neat package of action rpg awesomeness. I think 2v2 matches would be a lot of fun so roll a character today!
